In Sumerian, the dessert was known as NINDA.Ì.DÉ.A, possibly "drenched cake" -- I always imagined these treats being drenched in syrup, maybe like Baklava or Tiramisu. Someone in the comments suggested kleicha (كليچة), which is remarkably similar to Newtons, and I'm completely convinced.
