Before Oregon Trail (1971), there was the Sumerian Game (1964). This edutainment video game was one of three developed to teach sixth graders fundamental economic principles and theory. The Sumerian Game evolved from computer-assisted instruction into a now famed artifact, gaining prominence through various unofficial adaptations and translations prior to the first commercially successful personal computer, the Altair 8800 (1974). The game’s renown was due to continuous demonstrations, engaging play, commercial magazine advertisements and reporting, and support from school programs, such as nearby Lexington High School.
